Conjlinux: the CONsole Junkie Linux distribution
About
Conjlinux is a smallish binary distribution with focus on:
- besides the optional X support, ensure proper console operation
- keep software bloat and unnecessary dependencies low: no systemd, can install minimal system without perl or python
- targeting *NIX experts who want to install by manually partitioning disks and creating file systems from a shell
Keeping software bloat under control is possible only with certain
compromises:
- conjlinux speaks English; wherever possible i18n is disabled or patched out
- there is no fancy desktop on X, just Xorg and a window manager
- some large and hopelessly obese software are simply not packaged (e.g. openoffice); these can be run using a different distro within qemu
- no multiarch support (so if you install x86_64 binaries, you won't get libraries and executables for i386 even tho your CPU and kernel would be able to use them)
- no support for selinux
Current state
[2024-06] Early stage, not easily testable yet. Conjbootstrap works, can
produce usable chroots, already boots in qemu and on real hardware. Packages
are not self-hosted yet, they are built on Devuan. The only arch supported
at the moment is x86_64.
