Most linuxes seems to use CUPS, partly because that is what is wanted
by some applications like libreoffice. Gimp and firefox are not really
prepared to printout with lpr. Cheap inkjets are best supported by CUPS,
mostly because lacking support for lpr style printing. Foomatic has,
at least formely, had the attitude that users shouldn't mess with the
internals of postscript to printer conversions, to the extent of not
publishing information about it, so it has been harder than nessesary
to make printer filers for lpr to such printers. And yes, manuf. wants
big bloated "printer drivers", not any simple filter.

Gentoo has removed lpr, so you have to install it separately if you
want it.

I personally use postscript for everyting printing related, and pdf
limited to viewing on screen and sharing with others.
